Outline of the Institute

 ■Name

Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Environmental Sciences

 ■Purposes

Responding to the needs of Hyogo prefectural government, the Institute conducts researches to grasp the environmental status and emission trends in Hyogo and respond to environmental emergencies such as incidents of hazardous material leakage. The Institute conducts collaborative researches with national/public environmental institutes and universities, and provides dissemination activities.

 ■History

1948   Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Public Health was

          established.

1965   Environmental science division was established as a

branch of Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Public Health.

1968   Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Environmental Sciences

          was established.

2002   The two institutes were merged into Hyogo Prefectural

Institute of Public Health and Environmental Sciences.

2009    Environmental sciences division was separated from

Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Public Health and

Environmental Sciences, and became Hyogo Prefectural

Institute of Environmental Sciences as a division of

          Hyogo Environmental Advancement Association

 ■Organization

  ●General Affairs Division

  ●Water Environment Division

  - approaches to both eutrophication problems in Osaka-bay and nutrient-poor problems in Harima-nada by    conducting  experiments on environmental conditions for coastal organisms such as clams and examining adaptive  measures to control organic pollutant loads and nutrients in the Seto Inland Sea. (key words: eutrophication,  material cycle, coastal environmental management)

  ●Environmental Safety Division

    - contributes to advancement of the measures on hazardous chemicals by performing dynamic and trans boundary   analysis of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) and agricultural chemicals in     the environment, surveying chemical pollution in Hyogo, and examining the mechanisms of chemical pollution. (key   words: chemical risk, analytical method development, organic fluorine compounds)

  ●Atmospheric Environment Division

  - contributes to advancement of the measures against regional and local air pollution of PM2.5 by conducting        PM2.5 concentration analysis, component analysis, and simulations using models such as WRF/CMAQ (Weather   Research and Forecasting Model/ Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model), and also conducting field surveys on   oxidants, acid deposition and yellow sands.

■International Cooperation

The Institute provides training programs to researchers of administrative officers of developing countries through JICA training courses: commissioned projects of Hyogo Environment Advancement Association from JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
